Health Anxiety Hypnotherapy in Lancaster
“What if this is something serious?”
“What if I have cancer?”
“What if this pain means something?”
Health anxiety can create a constant state of worry and hypervigilance around your body and physical symptoms. Even a small sensation can quickly trigger fear and lead to repeated checking, searching online or asking other people for reassurance.
The difficulty is that reassurance may help for a little while, but the worry often returns. Over time, this can become exhausting and begin to affect everyday life, relationships and your ability to relax.
The cycle of health anxiety
A physical sensation may trigger a worrying thought. That thought can then lead to checking your body, searching symptoms online, seeking reassurance or repeatedly thinking through the worst possible explanation.
Although checking or reassurance may reduce anxiety temporarily, it can also keep your attention focused on the symptom. When another sensation appears, the cycle can begin again.
You may also find yourself avoiding conversations about illness, medical programmes, certain places or situations involving germs or contamination because they feel too distressing.
When worry starts to take over
Health anxiety can sometimes become more intense after difficult experiences involving illness, bereavement or periods of high stress. For others, there may not be one obvious starting point.
Some behaviours associated with health anxiety, such as repeated checking or reassurance-seeking, can also appear in other anxiety-related difficulties. This does not mean that one condition automatically causes or confirms another.
If your worry feels persistent or overwhelming, speaking with your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional can also be helpful.
How hypnotherapy may help with health anxiety
I offer Solution Focused Hypnotherapy in Lancaster to support people who feel caught in cycles of health-related worry and anxious thinking.
Rather than repeatedly analysing every symptom, our sessions focus on where you are now, how you would prefer to feel and the small, manageable changes that may help you respond differently to anxious thoughts.
Hypnosis provides a period of guided relaxation and focused attention, forming part of the wider Solution Focused approach we use during our sessions together.
The aim is not to convince you that every physical sensation is harmless. Instead, we work on reducing the amount of time and energy that anxiety takes up and helping you develop a calmer response to uncertainty.
Medical symptoms still matter
Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical assessment. New, unexplained, severe or concerning symptoms should always be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.
If anxiety is a major part of what you are experiencing, you may also find my page on anxiety and stress helpful.
If repetitive checking or intrusive thoughts are a significant part of the problem, you may also want to read about my support for OCD.
